FG Wilson On the Ball Powering Aviva Stadium

As one of the leading global manufacturers of gas and diesel generator sets, sporting arenas and stadiums are increasingly turning to FG Wilson (Engineering) Ltd, to ensure that their programme of sporting and music events run without a hitch.

The Aviva Stadium in Dublin, formerly Lansdowne Road, is a world class venue for rugby, football, concerts and business conferences and everything from the scoreboards and the floodlights to the under pitch heating is powered by FG Wilson generators with a 6.8 MVA power rating. FG Wilson has installed power generation sets and runs ongoing maintenance contracts at other stadiums including Croke Park, Casement Park and Thomond Park.

In its original incarnation, Lansdowne Road stadium was the oldest sports stadium in Europe but after a complete rebuild programme in 2007, the 50,000 all-seater Aviva Stadium re-opened in August 2010.

FG Wilson, invited to tender for the power supply through the main contractors Kentz, secured the order due to their technical expertise in ensuring the delivery of a bespoke solution that was integral to the look and feel of the finished structure and their early involvement with the stadium redevelopment.

Immediately FG Wilson identified that to deliver the power requirements of this site, four 1,700 kVA generator sets would be required. In concealing the generators in a very compact space underneath the stadium seating (level 7), the aesthetics of the stadium remained intact and prevented the need to house them externally in a storage facility, as is often the case. All air-handling, cooling systems, exhaust units and switchgear were also concealed within the envelope of the stadium's expansive seating racks. In conjunction with the project architect, the exhaust system was moulded into polycarbonate blades of the surface structure of the stadium meaning no protrusions or exposure to rainwater. The exhaust is fitted with its own drainage system to keep rainwater out.

During stadium events, the generator sets operate in parallel with the ESB mains supply to supplement the stadium's power demand and also deliver no break standby power on mains failure.

In order to deliver this control philosophy FG Wilson designed a fully integrated control system, based on the Allen Bradley Hot-standby PLC platform. This delivered a high level of system redundancy and greatly increased the operational security of the stadium.

The timing of the installation of the generator sets was critical as they needed to be in situ prior to the fixing of the seating racks above them. Any delay in the positioning would have had impacts on the timeline for the seating construction above. This part of the project was completed to schedule so enabling the further smooth running of the stadium build.

Another challenge overcome by FG Wilson was noise. The Aviva Stadium is surrounded by residential properties and the power product solution had to guarantee extremely low noise levels. This was set at 53 dBA at 1m, which is low for this type of installation, but as the surrounding area is a highly desirable residential development, minimal noise was critical to the overall success of the scheme.

To ensure noise levels were correct the generators were set on spring based anti-vibration pads. This means that there is no vibration translation to the structure of the building when the power supply is on as the generators are effectively isolated from the structure itself.

Another advantage presented by FG Wilson is that all external contractors on site, from burger vans to merchandise sellers to event crews, can access the stadium's power supply rather than bringing their own generators onto the site. This was not previously possible. The capacity provided by FG Wilson's generators is 5.44 MW and at peak usage the Aviva Stadium uses on average 3.5 MW. The generators have a local 24 hr hour daily service fuel tank, supplied from a large bulk fuel storage tank to provide multiple day 100% load run autonomy.

The power solution presented by FG Wilson also has an environmental benefit in the form of a heat recovery facility. From the jackets surrounding the engines up to 750 kw of heat is 'recovered' from each machine and used to heat the pitch and provide other forms of heating around the stadium.

The installation programme, which took 11 months from tendering to completion, was completed on time and within budget ahead of the opening game in August 2010. Since then, hundreds of football and rugby matches, concerts and events have taken place with Madonna having played there recently to a capacity crowd.
David Blennerhassett, Dealer principal at FG Wilson in Dublin said: "This was a very challenging stadium project which presented a number of issues from a noise, space and design perspective. But in getting to grips with the project from an early phase and working with the M & E Consultants throughout the tendering process we were able to deliver a reliable, competitive and quality power product that exceeded all initial expectations. We had a lot of positive input from the initial stages, which was instrumental in determining the final solution.  The Aviva Stadium was an immensely satisfying project of which we are extremely proud and as part of our ongoing maintenance programme we always ensure that we have a representative on site every time there is an event taking place."

FG Wilson Powering the Olympic Park

Olympic Games Opening Ceremony
The London Olympic Games 2012 may be over but the leading manufacturer of diesel and gas generator sets, FG Wilson, is ensuring that the legacy of the spectacular multi-million pound event site continues. Having provided generator sets to power the events at three of the Olympic Park's eight venues - the Aquatics Centre, IBC Media Centre and the Olympic Stadium - they are now contracted to provide ongoing support and maintenance for the next year.

The project, which is being delivered by Bells Controls and Equipment Ltd - an official FG Wilson UK Dealer - began in 2008 and is worth over £500,000.

London 2012 has been the catalyst for transforming 2.5 square kilometres of industrial land in east London into the 490 acre Olympic Park which has changed the landscape irrevocably.

The power solution delivered by Bells consisted of a 635kVA and 730KVA generator for Life Safety Services within the main stadium. Both generators were housed in bespoke enclosures designed to achieve a noise level of NR 50 at 5 metres. The enclosures also featured an exhaust flue extension that discharged within the outlet attenuator, providing exhaust gas dilution.

At the IBC Media Centre, a complex 24-hour media hub for around 20,000 broadcasters, photographers and journalists, featured a 200kVA generator within a specially designed enclosure rated at 65dBA at 1 metre. The enclosure was positioned on the roof of the building and also featured an internal fuel system, which was installed inside the structure. The fuel pipe solution installed used an innovative flexible pipe in pipe system rather than traditional mild steel welded pipe in pipe, facilitating a quicker installation. At the Aquatics Centre, one of the permanent venues specially constructed for London 2012, and the site of Team GB's three medal victory, a 350kVA generator set was installed. The generator set was housed within a bespoke enclosure rated at 60dBA at 1 metre within the plant room, including all of the necessary ventilation ductwork and flue pipe work. The system was also used throughout the Aquatics Centre.

Robert Scott, regional sales manager UK at FG Wilson, commented: "The project has been a huge success and it has been a privilege to be involved with the Olympic Park legacy. Careful planning, design, engineering and attention to detail has been central to ensuring the success of this project. The athletes may have gone home but Bells will continue to provide ongoing services to the venues at the site under the current contract."

James Murphy Director of Bells Control said: "We were delighted to win the Olympic Park project after a very detailed and competitive tendering process. It has been a challenging project due to a number of factors including the sheer size of the venue, as well as the high level security constraints and low noise levels required, but we have successfully implemented resilient, high power solutions which meet the individual requirements of the respective venues."

FG Wilson Takes Power Generation to New Heights at Heron Tower

When the leading manufacturer of diesel and gas generator sets, FG Wilson and official UK Dealer, Bells Control Equipment Ltd, were contracted by Skanska to install three FG Wilson 2500 kVA diesel generator sets (4016-TGR-3A) to Heron Tower, the first 'six star' office development in London, the biggest challenge was getting the 20 tonne equipment to the 42nd floor of the sleek new skyscraper and making it fully operational.

The generator sets, which are positioned at one of the highest points in the country, provide 7.5 MVA at 11KV back up power for the 46 floor building. One year after the £3 million project was completed, FG Wilson generator sets continue to provide a robust and reliable power supply to tenants at Heron Tower and ensure the smooth running of some of London's most prestigious bars, restaurants and global businesses.

Commenting on the project, James Murphy, director of Bells Control, said: "Working height and noise/vibration levels were the biggest challenges during this project. To overcome this, a crane lift was positioned on Bishopsgate and used to raise the generator sets to the top of the 230 metre high building. Due to the weight limitations, the generator set components were offloaded, positioned and re-assembled in the generator room, which was built on the 42nd floor. To keep noise and vibration levels to a minimum an acoustic room was designed and constructed on the 42nd and 43rd floors. The acoustic room was completely isolated from the core structure and incorporates inlet / outlet attenuation, exhaust gas silencers and flue system."

The noise levels of the acoustic room are set at 75dB (A) at 1 metre and NR35 at the nearest office space. The vibration reduction achieved exceeds British Standards requirements at 98.8 per cent. As part of the project Bells Control positioned remote radiators on the 43rd floor complete with all connecting pipe work between the engine and the radiator.

In the basement Bells installed a 42,000 litre diesel bulk storage tank with twin pumps capable of pumping up 45 floors (22 Bars of pressure) to individual day tanks (1000 litres) located in the generator plant room.

Bells Control were also responsible for the supply and installation of five MV Switch boards to the building, consisting of 21 MV switches as well as the installation of a fibre cabling network including a Photo-Voltaic and G59 system. The switches, as well as an additional 150 x LV/MV breakers can be controlled and operated on site or remotely by a dual 'hot' standby PLC system. This increases system resilience by providing full back up control in the event of a network or PLC failure.

Robert Scott, Regional Sales Manager, and UK, at FG Wilson, comments: "Skanska wanted a reliable and cost effective solution that performed within the constraints of the building. Thanks to the technical expertise of all involved, the project was a great success. It has been a privilege to work on this landmark project which is at the cutting edge of design."

The sky’s the limit for latest high profile FG Wilson project

The leading manufacturer of diesel and gas generator sets, FG Wilson, has completed one of its 'tallest' orders to date following the installation of life safety and tenants' standby generation sets at Western Europe's tallest building, The Shard which is part of London Bridge Quarter.

The project was delivered by Bells Control Equipment Ltd - an official FG Wilson UK dealer - in partnership with Mace. This latest power installation at the world's first 'vertical city' follows on from high profile commercial project successes including Heron Tower, the Olympic Stadium and Selfridges.

Standing at 309.6 metres (1,016 ft) high, The Shard which officially inaugurated on 5th July this year, has redefined London's skyline and Bells have designed and delivered a complete turnkey solution, on time and within budget.

This turnkey power solution consisted of a number of elements:

Two FG Wilson 4016 TRG2 2000KVA generator sets, complete with heat exchanger units, were installed on basement level three of the building. A key component to the power system was a cooling water system for each unit. Over 450m of flow/return pipework connect the generators located on basement level three to the remote radiators located on plant roof level 20. Dry air coolers were selected to achieve the required duty and noise level while duplex cooling pumps and pressurisation units ensure a consistent 10 Bar operating pressure.

Each generator was encased within an acoustic close fit canopy complete with acoustic floor and high performance anti-vibration mounts. These measures reduced noise to 70dB (A) at one metre within the plantroom and allowed vibration isolation greater than 98% to be achieved.

Single stage exhaust silencers, measuring in excess of 5000mm, were installed on each of the generator sets. Each silencer achieved a noise level of 70dB at one metre and combined with a 400mm i/d, 600mm o/d flue running from the basement to the termination point on the roof plant, level 20, total an impressive 100m in length.

36,000 litres of bulk fuel storage consisting of six spilt tanks were installed within the main central core of the building - part of a complete fuel supply and transfer system running through the structure from the ground floor. The fuel pipe solution installed represents a first in commercial office use with a flexible pipe in pipe system implemented rather than traditional mild steel welded pipe in pipe. This innovation allowed significant time savings for this stage of the project.

Bells were also responsible for the installation of all control cabling and local controllers. A PLC system was utilised to monitor supply and extract ventilation, the fuel system and cooling water system. The generator sets fully support all parasitic loads while the PLC system ensures that emergency failure or human error will not cause the generator system to fail.

Paul Connolly the MEP project manager for Mace at The Shard comments: "The remit from Mace to Bells and FG Wilson was clear and simple; bring all innovations and best practices to The Shard project to ensure the successful delivery of the turnkey generator package. Bells and FG Wilson's response was to deliver a solution that excelled, leading in design development, sequential programming of key components within their domain, technical submittals of equipment and delivery of the turnkey generator package."

James Murphy, director of Bells Control said: "It is testament to all those involved in the design and construction of the project, and the vision of developer, Irvine Sellar, and his team that this inspirational building has been constructed. This vision was made real by Mace's project management expertise and by their recognition that the generator system should be a single contractor turnkey package."

FG Wilson Engineering Ltd…Designed to Deliver More

FG Wilson Engineering Ltd is a truly global company with over 3,000 employees and 40 years of experience in the supply of diesel and gas generator sets. The FG Wilson product range from 5.5 - 2,500 kVA, includes open and enclosed generator sets providing prime and standby power - from standby domestic use, right up to power modules with the ability to operate as complete power stations supplying electricity to national grids.

FG Wilson serve and support customers all over the world through its Global Dealer Network. The UK has been a particularly strong market for them for many years. With the back-up of FG Wilson's power solutions team, Dealers can meet any power requirement, no matter how complex. One example of a project for which FG Wilson are providing power is the Royal London Hospital.

The Royal London Hospital has been one of London's landmark buildings since it's construction in Whitechapel in the East End of London since 1757. It has now been improved with a re-design by HOK, one of the world's most acclaimed architectural design firms. The new hospital features a cluster of inter-connected contemporary glass buildings, including two 18-storey towers and one ten-storey tower.

Redevelopment of the hospital got underway in May 2006, with completion of phase I scheduled for 2012, and phase II due to complete in 2014/2015. FG Wilson was appointed by contractor, Skanska as a design phase partner. Following this design phase, FG Wilson was appointed to supply and install high voltage generator sets.

FG Wilson's role in the project entailed the design, supply and integration of 11MVA of standby diesel generation to be incorporated into the 11kV network within a purpose built plantroom on the 18th floor of the tower.

To meet the stringent acoustical requirements, the design encompassed individual acoustic enclosures arranged within the plant room. This space included switchgear room, control suite, daily fuel service room, exhaust gas treatment and leak detection.

Due to the critical power demands of the hospital, there was a high level of resilience required in the design of all aspects of the scheme. This involved an N+1 arrangement of 5 number FG Wilson P2000 Generator sets. These generators comprise of the Perkins 4016 TAG2A Prime Mover coupled to a Leroy Somer LSA54 11kV Alternator.

To manage the complex nature of the control and distribution of the electrical power a Duty / Standby PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) and a network of remote input & output PLC outstations were implemented throughout the hospital buildings, interfacing through multiple HMI (Human Machine Interface) & SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) touch screen workstations. This high-level control system included generator control, neutral earthing resister control, HV synchronizing, fuel system monitoring and power management of the high and low voltage distribution system throughout the site.
One of the key elements of this project was the delivery of 2.1 MWe of critical power within 15 seconds of mains failure, whilst meeting the G3 performance class of ISO8528-Part 5.

To achieve this challenge, we incorporated the philosophy of 'Dead Bus Synchronisation'. This involves the start-up of the 5 generators together, and while running up between 1200-1500 RPM the excitation is switched on, allowing the gensets to synchronise together onto the bus bar, ready to accept load on voltage stabilisation.

Another complex aspect of the project was the detailed factory validation of the system prior to dispatch from the FG Wilson's manufacturing facility at Larne, Northern Ireland. This type of rigorous FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) allowed FG Wilson to flex the muscles of its Power Solutions team and their in-house resources.

As the project nears the successful completion of phase I, Ian Neville, Skanska's Operations Manager commented, "We are very pleased with the professional and high quality service that we have received from FG Wilson on this project."

Continuously innovating, FG Wilson has invested millions of pounds in recent years in their manufacturing facility in Larne, Northern Ireland. State of the art technology has been incorporated into new production lines and test facilities. The Larne site also encompasses Europe's largest hemi-anechoic chamber - providing advanced acoustic research and testing capability. The company also has manufacturing plants in Brazil, China, India and the United States.

FG Wilson's strength is in their Dealer network and in-house team of highly qualified electrical and mechanical engineers, whose power expertise includes:

Power to the people

How often do we think about where our electricity comes from? Rarely. We can take our power so much for granted because the National Grid PLC partners with industry leading power experts to ensure a continuous supply.

Green Frog Power supplies standby power to the National Grid via power stations throughout the UK. In turn, FG Wilson is working closely with Green Frog to provide occasional peak lopping power for up to two hours at a time (around 200 hours a year).

Following the award of a 15 year Short Term Operating Reserve (STOR) contract with National Grid, Green Frog selected a number of UK development sites - North East, Yorkshire and South Wales - for a series of fourteen 20MW power plants.

FG Wilson's relationship with Green Frog Power began two years ago when the manufacturer assisted with a malfunctioning 800kW test machine installed at Green Frog's Birmingham HQ. Having efficiently resolved the problem, FG Wilson was invited to quote for 214MWe of STOR equipment over the fourteen designated UK sites.

Jeremy Taylor CEO of Green Frog Power said:
"With a very large order for plant to fulfill we trawled through Europe and China seeking the best-priced equipment that was robust enough for our needs and we were delighted to find that a British manufacturer came top. Since placing our orders we have been very pleased by the quality and level of service from FG Wilson and Progress Group throughout our project."

FG Wilson's expertise in standby power helps Green Frog and the National Grid to regulate the supply and demand for power in the UK. As our increasingly technology dependent lifestyles place growing demand on the grid, STOR is a crucial requirement.

Phil Starr, project director of FG Wilson Dealer, The Progress Group, commented:
"FG Wilson provided invaluable assistance with this contract, obtaining special short term base load ratings from Perkins and answering a series of challenging technical questions relating to the installation of a large number of generators in a relatively small area. This was all delivered quickly and efficiently without which the project would have stalled."

As an ongoing project with an estimated lifespan of around 20 years, the Green Frog STOR project has already resulted in the creation of ten new jobs.

The challenges presented by the project have been numerous but in particular the handling of acoustics, airflows and underlying issues of electrical stability and fault protection have all been critical in ensuring this work has been a success from planning through to implementation.

Phil Starr added:
"This has been a challenging project from the outset but one which has allowed FG Wilson to really demonstrate the capabilities of its generator sets. The solution not only involved delivering the generator sets to meet intermittent and unexpected demands but also help shape the future direction of the business, anticipating future challenges and mapping out the best possible route forward."

Within hours of Green Frog opening its Hull site for service, a sudden surge in electricity demand prompted the National Grid to call them for emergency back-up. An output of 20MW was produced continuously for seventy minutes without incident, proving the success of this STOR project.

So next time you turn on the kettle during the ad break, be grateful to the many power experts involved in guaranteeing you a hot cuppa!

FG Wilson powering data centres

In recent years data centres have represented an expanding opportunity for us. Our product is providing power support for data centres in countries all over the world including UK and Ireland, Europe, South America and Asia.

Sentrum – owner and operator of multiple data centres across the UK – is just one example of a major data centre company relying on us for power support. A specialist in the operation and on-going management of mission-critical environments, Sentrum offers flexible, cost effective and resilient data centre solutions delivered by a highly experienced team. Comprising in excess of 1.4 million sq ft, Sentrum’s high specification facilities have been designed and built to enable clients to confidently specify every aspect of their data centre.

Sentrum was also the first data centre operator to offer fully bespoke and scalable solutions, with dedicated plant (mechanical & electrical infrastructure) for every data suite. This ensures that Sentrum customers benefit from access to truly customised solutions both in terms of space, power configurations and levels of resilience.

Tri-Gen Power, one of our UK Dealers, has supported Sentrum with all its standby power needs. Over 130 FG Wilson diesel generator sets, rated at 1500kVA, have been supplied, installed and commissioned by Tri-Gen Power in the past few years. These generator sets were supplied with FG Wilson sound attenuated enclosures, 20m long and weighing 70 ton.

As the data centres are often situated close to residential areas, this power product also had to guarantee extremely low noise levels. The cooling system was designed with remote roof mounted radiators, fitted with low noise level cooling fans, whilst the exhaust system involves three separate low noise level silencer elements that discharge vertically.

The generator sets are fitted with automatic synchronising panels and typically paralleled in groups of twenty. They are also supplied with fuel tanks with a running capacity of 72 hours.

Franek Sodzawiczny, Sentrum’s co-founder and chief development officer, commented,
“Our selection of FG Wilson generator sets for our UK data centres was based on quality, reliability, competitive pricing and delivery – we were not disappointed.”

Tri-Gen Power has sales and marketing offices in Mayfair with project design and after sales support from premises in Woking.

As the demands of the data centre sector continue to evolve, FG Wilson continues to adapt its product and service offering to remain the first choice for power support.

FG Wilson providing power to 'One New Change'

FG Wilson Engineering Ltd is a truly global company with over 3,000 employees and 45 years of experience in the supply of diesel and gas generator sets. Our product range from 6.8 - 2,500 kVA, includes open and enclosed generator sets providing prime and standby power - from standby domestic use, right up to power modules with the ability to operate as complete power stations supplying electricity to national grids.

We serve and support customers all over the world through our Global Dealer Network. The UK has been a particularly strong market for us for many years. With the back-up of FG Wilson’s power solutions team, Dealers can meet any power requirement, no matter how complex. One example of a project for which FG Wilson are providing power is ‘One New Change’, London. This is Land Securities’ latest development, located on Cheapside in the heart of the City of London.

One New Change is a contemporary building with a total of eight floors comprising offices on the top four floors and cafes, restaurants and shops on the lower floors. With around 60 stores spanning three floors, One New Change is one of the largest shopping centres in central London, rivaling other London shopping hot-spots. A panoramic lift in the buidling’s centre provides the public with access to a roof level terrace offering impressive views over St. Paul’s Cathedral dome.

Some interesting facts about One New Change:
  • One New Change stands at 560,000 sq feet (52,024 sq metres) and is the equivalent of just over 12 football pitches, with 220,000 sq feet of retail space and 330,000 sq feet office space
  • One New Change will be home to 3,000 office workers
  • The external cladding is made up of 6,500 glass panels of different sizes, shapes and colours, of which 4,300 are individually hand crafted
  • Upon completion half a kilometre of perimeter wall will have been built and 330,000 bricks will have been laid (at its peak, 12,000 bricks were delivered every week)

FG Wilson installed the lifesafety and emergency power generation for the total site, comprising of the supply and installation of :

Very stringent noise requirements for both the commercial office space, and for Cheapside were met with specifically designed FG Wilson acoustic enclosures, with floating floor arrangements constructed on site during a very complex installation phase.  We assisted in the modelling of the acoustic installation in order to minimise noise levels at the viewing terrace. Our Power Solutions design team also ensured that the enclosures and exhaust systems of the generating sets would not detract from the view at the top of St. Paul’s dome.

This project also involved the integration of the fuel system into the fire officer’s philosophy for the building to ensure safe operation during emergencies.

To manage the complex nature of the control and distribution of the electrical power, a Duty / Standby PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) and a network of remote input & output PLC out-stations were implemented throughout the building, interfacing through SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) touch screen workstations.  This high-level control system included generator control, neutral earthing resister control, HV generator and mains synchronizing, fuel system monitoring and power management of the high voltage distribution system throughout the site.

Continuously innovating, FG Wilson has invested millions of pounds in recent years in our manufacturing facility in Larne, Northern Ireland. State of the art technology has been incorporated into new production lines and test facilities. The Larne site also encompasses Europe’s largest hemi-anechoic chamber – providing advanced acoustic research and testing capability. We also have manufacturing plants in Brazil, China, India and the United States.

Our strength is in our Dealer network and in-house team of highly qualified electrical and mechanical engineers, whose power expertise includes:
  • Advanced control and synchronisation systems
  • PLC
  • Remote cooling
  • Exhaust silencer systems
  • Room acoustic treatment
  • Weatherproof and acoustic enclosures
  • Specialist environmental protection
  • High & Low ambient applications
  • Factory and on-site testing

FG Wilson Support Cogeneration Power Station

Country: Ukraine
Industry Sector: Industry
Product(s): Two PG1250B
Application: Combined Heat and Power

The largest glassware manufacturer in the Ukraine, the Gostomel Glass Plant in Kiev produces up to 1.5 million units per day for use in various industries, for both indigenous and export use.

Energy costs are a major concern for industries in the Ukraine accounting for 15% (average) of the total cost of goods sold each year by Gostomel.

Significant annual energy cost savings as well as a large reduction in energy consumption had been achieved through energy efficiency measures following an energy audit. Continuing these improvements, Gostomel, in partnership with Energy Alliance (Ukraine’s first privately owned energy services company) commissioned a new Natural Gas Fired Cogeneration Power Station, enlisting the help of FG Wilson.

Designed and manufactured by FG Wilson Power Solutions, the Cogeneration Power Station, comprises two FG Wilson PG1250B gas generator sets with integrated waste heat recovery modules. The complete power station produces a combined total output of 2000 kWatt/hour of electricity and 2.15 Gcal/hour of reclaimed heat doing so at a cost of $0.015/ kWh, an incredible three times less than the state energy company.

The project required two PG1250B gas generator sets each powered by a Perkins 4016 series electronic spark ignited gas engine, coupled to a Leroy Somer low voltage alternator each at 1250 kVA output. The sets were equipped with bespoke control systems for single and/or parallel use with a master synchronising PLC and with close remote monitoring and control. Waste heat from each engine jacket water and exhaust system is recovered by heat exchanger and smoke tube boiler modular systems.

Limited space and proximity to the local community meant the generating sets and heat recovery packages were installed in an existing boiler house. The cooling groups were completed with low noise multi fan radiators sited outside the building. The heat generated by the cogeneration units is supplied to residents of adjacent apartment buildings.

FG Wilson’s Moscow office worked closely with Madek, the local FG Wilson Dealer in the Ukraine. Allied to this, Power Solutions’ renowned technical expertise and project management skills helped ensure the successful execution of this prestigious project.

Madek and Gostomel engineers installed and commissioned the plant having received training in the operation and aftercare of the equipment both at the FG Wilson factory in Larne and on site in Kiev.

Local and international dignitaries, and members of the local business community attended the official opening of the upgraded plant. At the ceremony a senior Gostomel representative stated, “Through this Power Station, we will be able to meet approximately 57% of our overall energy needs, significantly reducing our energy costs and making our products even more competitive”.

FG Wilson powers one of the world’s largest multi-unit installations

Country: Brazil
Industry Sector: Oil/Gas/Power
Product(s): 576 x P675P5
Application: Standby

One of the world’s largest generator set installations became operational in July 2009, powered by over 500 FG Wilson units.

Aruanã Energia, SA, one of our sub-Dealers in Brazil, installed and commissioned an impressive 576 x P675P5 generator sets over a nine month period to a site in the town of Igarassu, Pernambuco.

When combined these generator sets have the capacity to supply a total output of 236 MW of standby power to the national grid in Brazil. The power plant is expected to operate between 1000 – 2000 hours every year during times of peak demand and to provide additional power during the winter months. Our sub-Dealer, Aruanã Energia, SA, successfully won the contract in June 2006 to supply two power plants, Pau Ferro (94 MW) and Termomanaus (142 MW), which were later merged on to the same site. As part of this contract Aruana Energia, SA, have been appointed to supply power via this installation for the next 15 years.

Aruanã Energia, SA, were contracted to supply and install the following:
  • 576 x P675P5 (baseload rated at450 kW, 60 Hz, 440v)
  • EasYgen 3200 sync panels
  • Industrial silencers
  • Battery chargers
  • Motorized circuit breakers
  • Fuel transfer solenoids

The FG Wilson manufacturing facility in Brazil had to meet these substantial manufacturing requirements within a tight timeframe whilst already operating close to maximum production capacity. All the generator sets were ordered, built and delivered onsite and to schedule, within a seven month period, by 11th December 2008.

In addition to the huge number of generator sets and peripheral equipment, the actual installation of the units also posed a number of challenges. For example, roads leading to the site ran through sugar field plantations, which were impassable during certain times of the rainy season. This presented a major hurdle when managing the logistics of receiving and offloading the hundreds of generator sets, transformers, cable and other site materials during the nine month construction period.  As only two generator sets could be transported by truck at any one time, it took over 250 delivery runs for the appointed transport company, who covered a staggering 1.3 million km in carrying out this mammoth task.

The Pau Ferro and Termomanaus Power Plants were designed to be the most cost effective solution for standby/peak shaving applications for the Brazilian power market. These costs savings are gained through the innovative use of highly efficient diesel engines as the main source of power.

Traditionally, larger more expensive industrial, locomotive or ship engines would be used in Brazil for standby/peak shaving applications. This unique design was the most cost-effective solution available and was based on a 15% annual plant utilisation factor. Some of its most impressive features include very low acquisition and installation costs, optimised fuel economy at all dispatch levels and low operations and maintenance costs. The generator sets operate at 440v and step up to 34.5 kV transformers, which again step up to the 230 kV transmission grid line. A single plant operator remotely controls each plant, via a stateof- the-art SCADA system which was developed specifically for this project by our Dealer Aruanã and
FG Wilson Power Solutions Team. This advanced control system dispatches and regulates power from the generator sets as required, allowing the operator to simply input the necessary plant output. This provides tremendous savings in operating and maintenance costs over the lifetime of the power plant. Aruanã Energia, SA, hope to market this type of plant for smaller distributed power stations in the range of 50 MW, with a focus on isolated power systems in developing countries and remote industrial operations such as mining sites.

Aruanã Energia, SA, are an FG Wilson sub-Dealer and independent power producer that has been active in the Brazilian power market since 2002. They have participated in projects that have supplied over 650 MW of power in Brazil.
