Basra Sports City broadens it's Horizons

FG Wilson Dealer helps power iconic sports complex

FG Wilson, the leading global manufacturer of diesel and gas generator sets, has helped successfully deliver a full power solution for one of the largest multi-purpose sports complexes in the Middle East.

Working in close partnership with Horizons Engineering, its dealer in Jordan and Iraq, FG Wilson recently completed the power installation at Basra Sports City, an $800 million (£550m) mixed-use development which has received worldwide acclaim since officially opening earlier this year.

Comprising a 65,000-capacity main stadium, a secondary stadium big enough to house 10,000 people, four training fields and eight athletics arenas, the Iraq venue is set to host the 2015 Gulf Cup of Nations soccer tournament. As well as world-class sports facilities, Basra Sports City is also home to four five-star hotels as well as restaurants, a sports residential complex, a man-made lake, service buildings and a fire station.

Horizons managed the installation of seven FG Wilson generator sets - including one main FG Wilson 2500 kVA / 11 kV generator set, two 800 kVA containerized units, two 750 kVA containerized units and two 400 kVA canopy units. These are currently providing prime power to the entire 558-acre complex, however this will revert to back-up power at a later stage of the construction process, when major international events will take place in Basra Sports City.

The $1.5m Basra Sports City contract was awarded to Horizons by Anwar Soura General Contracting Company, for whom Horizons had delivered projects previously, with the brief requesting design, specification and installation of a back-up power system.

Indeed, so successful has the installation been that it has led to further similar business wins for Horizons, who has been named as the preferred supplier of power solutions for two major Government-funded sports complexes in Iraq - the Holy Al Najaf Stadium and Al Menaa Stadium.

It was the first time Horizons had worked on a project of the scale of Basra Sports City and there were a number of difficult challenges to be overcome, not least the local security issues, strict construction deadlines and the on-site ambient temperature. The combined expertise of FG Wilson and Horizons ensured these challenges were overcome, as Mohammed Ali Kilani, Deputy Managing Director of Horizons, explained:

"Basra Sports City is an iconic landmark of which the people of Iraq are extremely proud - it was a huge privilege for Horizons and FG Wilson to play such a key role in the 36-month construction project. Our track record of successfully delivering on installation contracts for Anwar Soura General Contracting Company was key to us securing the deal and we are looking forward to working on similar high-profile sports complex projects in the near future.
"As well as the huge scale of the project, our team and that of FG Wilson had to draw on our in-depth experience and expertise to ensure that the design, specification and installation of the generator sets met the very specific deadlines dictated by the overarching construction project. Our work was a vital cog in a huge machine and not meeting the deadlines was simply not an option but, as ever, our teams delivered on time, on budget and to specification.
"We had to carry out research to ascertain the specific type of generator set that was best suited to the site conditions and ensure the set loads were calculated to optimum levels, all the while having to contend with the ambient temperature of the site. Another major challenge which was very unique to this project was the security situation in Iraq - our management team had to take every precaution possible to ensure the safe delivery of the units to the site and, of course, to protect the units while they were on site."

The generator sets at Basra Sports City are located at different sites throughout the complex. The largest 2,500 kVA generator set and the 750 kVA containerised unit are situated in the 65,000-capacity main stadium with the other 750 kVA generator set positioned in the 10,000-seater secondary arena. There are two generator sets (800 kVA and 400 kVA) located at the pumping station and waste water treatment plant, with one in the data centre and one in the VIP guest house.

Commenting on the project, Eng. Maad Al Zubaidy, of Anwar Soura General Contracting Company, said:

"This was one of the most significant construction projects Iraq has seen in recent years and one which we hope will provide a lasting sporting and cultural legacy for the area. FG Wilson's stellar pedigree and reputation as the leading global manufacturer of diesel and gas generator sets, combined with Horizons' proven track record throughout Iraq and Jordan, made the partnership an obvious choice for the delivery of a back-up power solution.
"The project brief was met in full and we were extremely pleased with Horizons' performance and the final installation for Basra Sports City. The power solution provided for the development has been a huge success."

FG Wilson Dealer delivers power solution to state-of-the-art development

FG Wilson has teamed up with its authorised Egyptian Dealer, Triangle Heavy Equipment, to successfully deliver a power generation and backup power solution for the most exciting mixed-use development project in Egypt.

Cairo Festival City is Egypt's premier urban community, a three million sq m state-of-the-art development which offers indoor and outdoor shopping, dining and entertainment alongside luxury residential and office space.

The resort features 700,000 sq m of prime office space, 217,796 sq m of retail and leisure space, luxury living in gated communities, internationally renowned hotels, schools, children's educational theme park, dedicated automotive park, internal roads network and landscaped environments. Upon completion in 2018, Cairo Festival City will be home to over 13,000 residents and a place to work for 50,000 people.

Strategically located just 15 minutes from Cairo International Airport, the rapidly expanding facility is owned by Al-Futtaim Group Real Estate (AFGRE) and built by Al-Futtaim Carillion, one of the premier construction contractors in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and Orascom, Egypt's leading construction company.

Triangle Heavy Equipment, one of the leading generator set specialists in Egypt and an authorised FG Wilson Dealer since 2008, successfully delivered the power generation and backup power solution for Cairo Festival City, completing the one-year installation process in March 2013 on schedule, to specification and on budget.

The renowned stellar performance of the wide range of FG Wilson generator sets was instrumental in Triangle securing the power generation contract, with FG Wilson's rigorous product validation process being particularly important to contractors Al-Futtaim Carillion. Carried out at one of its world-class manufacturing facilities in Northern Ireland and at Triangle's service centre in Cairo, FG Wilson facilitated witness testing which demonstrated the quality of its generator sets across a range of aspects such as cooling, load acceptance, exhaust emissions, noise and vibration.

The installation involved 15 FG Wilson generator sets, ranging from 44 kVA right up to 550 kVA, which are located at, and providing power for, the water and sewage plants, four office blocks and the children's educational theme park - KidZania - as well as the construction of various buildings throughout the site. All of the generator sets are providing back-up power, apart from those at the construction sites which are providing prime power. Triangle is also managing the servicing and maintenance of the FG Wilson generator sets throughout the site on behalf of the contractor.

Costing a total of EGP 1,300,000,000, the installation project included the introduction of new fibre network technology which had never been implemented in Egypt before. This Air Pallone Fibre sees optical cables transfer data at the speed of light in glass, ensuring a high-speed communication first for the country.

Commenting on the installation project, Ashraf Kamal, of Triangle Heavy Equipment, said:
"Cairo Festival City is a truly world-class project which is rapidly changing the cityscape of Cairo and placing the city at the forefront of global mixed-use urban communities. It was a great honour for Triangle and FG Wilson to be awarded the power generation contract and we are extremely proud to have delivered a power solution befitting of this international project.
"The FG Wilson generator sets have a proven pedigree across the globe and will provide immediate back-up power during any shortage, meaning no disruption to the tens of thousands of people living and working in the development. The generator sets have been installed to ensure optimum cooling condition and, particularly in the office blocks, to ensure that that noise levels are to the satisfaction of the client.
"We received a huge endorsement of our work from the developer when we were recommended to manage all future generator set installations and maintenance throughout the Cairo Festival City site - which, we believe, could see us managing the installation of up to 16 additional FG Wilson 400 kVA units between now and 2018. This is thanks largely to the Power Wizard 2 control panel on our units which provides the development owners with the ability to monitor the generator sets' performances online from its headquarters in Dubai."
Maged Fawzy, of construction contractors Al-Futtaim Carillion, said:
"This is one of the most significant construction projects Cairo has seen in recent years and we co-ordinated a very competitive tender process to ensure we secured the best power solution for the overall development. Having the opportunity to visit the FG Wilson production facility in Northern Ireland and witness in person how the generator sets stand up to an extremely intense testing process was extremely reassuring. We felt confident that the combination of Triangle and FG Wilson would deliver and they certainly have."

The sky's the limit for FG Wilson

The sky's the limit for FG Wilson, the leading global manufacturer of diesel and gas generator sets, following the successful completion of the supply and installation of a high voltage power solution for the new international terminal of Milas-Bodrum Airport in Turkey.

The project was delivered on time and within budget by FGW Jenerator, an official FG Wilson dealer in Turkey. Milas-Bodrum is one of the busiest airports of the Aegean Region, serving Milas, a residential area with prominent cultural heritage, and the popular holiday destination of Bodrum. The terminal accommodates more than five million passengers from 40 different locations annually, meaning FG Wilson is helping to support the journeys of almost 14,000 people every day.

Milas-Bodrum Airport's new international terminal, which is 425m long with an indoor area of over 95,000 sq m, has been provided with a critical standby power system by FGW Jenerator. The five high voltage generator sets provide backup support for the entire new terminal, including nine passenger boarding bridges, restaurants, retail stores, check-in desks, passenger baggage facilities, information desks, banks and a post office, as well as almost 30,000 sq m of bus and car parking space.

Securing the order against strong competition, the project saw FGW Jenerator make important contributions to the design and specification planning from the outset, as well as liaising closely with other key project partners. FGW Jenerator's power solutions team completed the installation and commissioning phase in May 2012, overcoming a series of significant engineering challenges in the process.

Any loss of power at the airport can cause major issues, so it is essential that all critical loads are re-supplied as quickly as possible. In order to achieve this, FGW Jenerator installed five FG Wilson high voltage P1825 generator sets with the ability to deliver power to the airport distribution network at 6.3 kV.

Due to the critical nature of the application, the management and control of the entire standby power system was implemented using a redundant PLC (programmable logic controller) in conjunction with a user-friendly touch-screen SCADA HMI system.

The primary duty of the PLC system is to ensure the airport is transferred to standby power as quickly as possible on mains failure and on mains return, the load demand of the airport is smoothly and seamlessly transferred to the normal mains supplies.

The generator sets and mains synchronizing capability were implemented using Woodward easYgen 3500 controllers, ensuring that the five generator sets were synchronized and available to take load within 25 seconds of any mains power failure. FGW Jenerator packaged both the PLC system and the five easYgen controllers in an integrated floor standing control panel suite.

To underline the critical nature of this project, each generator set was supplied with two methods of engine starting, air and battery, a capability which delivered increased redundancy and ensured the generator sets could always start and be available to supply the critical airport loads.

To meet the strict noise conditions on site, the cooling system for each generator set was implemented using a combination of a set-mounted heat exchanger and low noise multi-electrical fan remote radiator. Another key element in enabling the noise conditions to be met was the installation in the plantroom of critical exhaust silencers on each engine.

The generator sets are located in a purpose-built generator room on the outskirts of the airport, with remote radiators separating the air start and fuel supply systems. The control, power and synchronization systems are situated in a facility next to the generator room.

The new terminal of the airport is now fully operational. Delighted with the installation and commissioning, Koksal Er, Dealer Principal, FGW Jenerator Turkey, commented:
"This is a great example of how FGW Jenerator's technical expertise and experience can provide a complete turnkey customer solution from concept through to commissioning. Having secured the service contract we are looking forward to a long-term, mutually-beneficial relationship with the management team at Bodrum Airport."

Technical Manager from Milas-Bodrum Airport added:
"FGW Jenerator was the perfect partner for the project to meet all our power requirements. FG Wilson's Dealer in Turkey demonstrated that it had the required technical abilities and experience to complete the project to specification and on schedule, providing invaluable input on the design from the outset. FG Wilson's reputation as a quality global generator set manufacturer combined with the expert local support of FGW Jenerator, was demonstrated throughout the duration of the project, and was key to the success of this installation."

FG Wilson products range from 5.5 - 2,500 kVA, including open and enclosed generator sets providing prime and standby power - from standby domestic use, right up to power modules with the ability to operate as complete power stations supplying electricity to national grids.

FG Wilson transforms health services at Forth Valley Hospital

There can be fewer greater requirements for an ever-reliable standby power supply than in a busy hospital. Put simply, lives could be lost if vital electronic equipment fails.

FG Wilson, one of the world's leading manufacturers of gas and diesel generating sets, recently strengthened its stellar pedigree in delivering resilient power solutions to hospitals which ensure unlimited power when the mains power fails.

The international engineering manufacturer, headquartered in Northern Ireland and with operations in China, the US, Brazil and India, was tasked in 2008 with supplying and delivering a standby system to power the entire £300m Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert.

Scotland's largest NHS hospital, the Forth Valley Royal opened in 2011 and features 860 beds and 16 operating theatres. The facility includes a mental health unit and a women and children's unit across an area the size of nine football pitches. It also boasts Scotland's first fully-robotic pharmacy system, in which robots dispense and label medicines.

The project has been successfully delivered by Dieselec Thistle Generators, an official FG Wilson Dealer, under contract from Lang O'Rourke. The 8MVA of power capacity, distributed via the site's 11,000 volt network, covers everything from the state-of-the-art kitchens to the hi-tech operating theatres.

Indeed, as a result of the work completed at this facility, FG Wilson and Dieselec Thistle have been awarded contracts with NHS hospitals in Fife and London as well as Europe's largest hospital, Southern General Hospital in Glasgow.

During a competitive pitch for the Forth Valley Royal contract in 2008, Dieselec Thistle and FG Wilson demonstrated their expertise and excellent track record with case studies of turnkey power solutions, which they had previously delivered for New Stobhill Hospital and New Victoria Hospital in Glasgow.

Dieselec Thistle Generators was awarded the tender following the submission of clear and transparent technical documentation about the full turnkey solution. The project consisted of four 2 MVA, 11,000 volt, 50 Hz generator sets synchronised together and arranged in a N+1 configuration to deliver a reliable standby power system to the hospital - even when one generator fails or is out of service for maintenance.

Crucially, FG Wilson designed the system so that it could accommodate critical loads in key areas of the building. As a key element of the power management system designed by FG Wilson, operating theatres, X-ray rooms and medical imaging centres could be brought back on line rapidly via generator standby power. The ability to implement this level of prioritisation was made possible by the span and reach of master hot/standby PLC and distributed I/O outstations.

The complete power system designed by FG Wilson delivers uninterrupted control of the power system, even when individual elements of the PLC control equipment and communications fail. In order to deliver this control, 14 PLC input/output outstations are located at main LV and HV switchboards throughout the hospital, with the outstations connected to the hot/standby PLC via a Fibre Optic cable system connected in a ring configuration.

With the ability to reduce the level of damaging earth fault current whilst still enabling protection to operate, FG Wilson also delivered an earthing system for the HV generator.

In addition, SCADA, a touchscreen Power Management Supervision system, was installed, enabling the hospital engineers to oversee the power management system and monitor and control any element of the system when required. FG Wilson ensured SCADA could be controlled from both the master PLC panel as well as remotely via the energy centre control room.

A key priority for the hospital was also to keep sound levels to a minimum, so FG Wilson designed and manufactured bespoke low noise containers which were housed in a compound on the hospital site.

George Hobbins of Dieselec Thistle Generators, project manager on the Forth Valley Hospital project, commented:
"As with any NHS hospital, ensuring costs remained viable was a priority for Forth Valley. Working in conjunction with FG Wilson, we delivered substantial savings compared to a conventional installation solution. It was a very rewarding project and a great success thanks to the co-operation and collaboration of all involved."

Publisher’s power is fit for purpose thanks to FG Wilson

Publisher’s power is fit for purpose thanks to FG Wilson

FG Wilson, the leading global manufacturer of diesel and gas generator sets, has successfully completed another headline-grabbing project after helping to deliver a high voltage power solution for one of the UK's leading publishing companies.

Working in conjunction with the Progress Group, one of its 380 Dealers worldwide, FG Wilson once again demonstrated its ability to deliver an integrated project in a busy workplace by installing two HV 2500-1 KVA diesel generator sets to DC Thomson's publishing plant in Dundee, Scotland.

Publishing newspapers and magazines for over a century, DC Thomson produces some of Scotland's strongest newspaper titles, including The Press and Journal, The Courier, The Sunday Post and the Evening Telegraph. Also part of DC Thomson's stable of titles are two of the world's best-loved children's comics - The Beano, first published in 1938 and still going strong, and The Dandy, which switched to a digital only format in December 2012.

The company was installing a new printing press capable of an increased output to improve the productivity and efficiency of its operations in an increasingly competitive economic environment. A fully-reliable backup power resource is required to ensure the printing press is able to meet its range of very strict, daily publication deadlines.

FG Wilson and the Progress Group were contracted by engineering consultants blyth & blyth to install the two HV 2500-1 KVA diesel generator sets to DC Thomson's publishing plant. There were a number of steep challenges inherent to this project, none more so than the requirement for the generator sets and containers to be fitted into an extremely confined space.

Given the dynamic nature of the DC Thomson operation and the need for the printing presses to be running round the clock, the installation work also had to be carried out within a very tight time period - no more than six hours on a Sunday morning. In order to minimise on-site installation work to tasks such as cabling, the generator sets and bespoke containers were assembled and integrated together offsite before being transported to the building as a complete package and integrated into the existing high voltage control systems. The 32-tonne generator sets and specially-designed containers were carefully lowered into the DC Thomson building by a 400-tonne crane.

By using their combined expertise, FG Wilson and the Progress Group successfully delivered the backup power system for DC Thomson within a year of its initial conception.

Commenting on the project, Hughie McRobbie, the Progress Group Project Manager who coordinated the installation, said:

"There is always a major element of risk involved when there is a requirement to deliver and integrate a high voltage power solution into a live working environment. DC Thomson required delivery of a backup power solution, which could be installed seamlessly without compromising its print operation, which really is a 24/7 business. FG Wilson and the Progress Group are renowned for meeting client requirements and we did that with this project - crucially, sizing the generator sets to the required dimensions prior to installation."

"The requirement for offsite manufacturing of the generator sets was addressed by sourcing containers and coordinating installation within a challenging and limited work space environment. While the installation of the electrical was more challenging than first anticipated, FG Wilson and a specialist controls company proved to be the perfect partner, calling upon our considerable experience and expertise as well as being able to work within the tight time and space constraints presented by the project."

The generator sets also have the capacity to synchronise with the Scottish Electricity Authority and export power into the network in a Short Term Operating Reserve (STOR) mode.
Derek Main, Associate for Consulting Engineers blyth & blyth, added:
"Installation of the generator sets within a limited available space and extremely tight time constraints were the most significant challenges faced by the team on the project. These were successfully overcome and the project was completed to meet all the requirements, with the additional security of supply for DC Thomson."

FG Wilson products range from 5.5 - 2,500 kVA, including open and enclosed generator sets providing prime and standby power - from standby domestic use, right up to power modules with the ability to operate as complete power stations supplying electricity to national grids.

Through a global network of 380 Dealers, FG Wilson serves and supports customers all over the world. With the backup of FG Wilson's power solutions teams, Dealers can meet any power requirement, no matter how complex.

While the legal entity name will change, the FG Wilson brand remains an essential to Caterpillar's long term global growth strategy in the electric power business with continued investment to ensure the availability of our quality product (One Global Quality Standard and Global Product Availability) and a continued focus on our next generation of world-class FG Wilson branded products - more of which you will hear about in the coming months.
Robert Kennedy, Operations Director of Caterpillar (NI) Ltd, said, "The move has been in the planning for some time and whilst the legal name of the company will change, the FG Wilson name will remain a key part of our history and heritage and indeed our future."
"Caterpillar will continue to produce the range of leading products that carry the FG Wilson brand and those products will continue to be a key part of our global Electric Power strategy," Mr. Kennedy added.
As the first step in the legal entity transition, changes to the external facility signage will begin on 18th January 2013 at all four sites in Northern Ireland: Larne, Millennium Way, Monkstown and Springvale.

Over the course of our 46-year history as industry leaders, FG Wilson has evolved to meet customer needs and industry challenges - we are committed to do whatever it takes to remain your market's number one choice for electric power products.
