Support Athens Stock Exchange building with three automatically synchronised generator sets

Country: Greece
Industry Sector: Financial
Product(s): P1100E1
Application: Standby

Petros Petropoulos completed an installation of generator sets at the new Stock Exchange in Athens, Greece

Petros Petropoulos AEBE was awarded a contract to supply, commission and install three P1100E1 generator sets to the new Athens Stock Exchange building. This replaced the existing building where the Stock Exchange had been established in 1932.

The new Stock Exchange is supported by the three automatically synchronised generator sets, which provide standby power for the entire building, including essential services such as IT systems and lighting. The generator sets were installed in the basement of the building and interconnecting pipe work was used to connect the generating sets to remote radiators. Engineered by FG Wilson Solutions, in conjunction with Petros Petropoulos, the remote radiators were installed on the roof and were specifically designed for low noise emissions of 60 dBA within a five metre radius.

The opening ceremony was attended by personnel from the Greek Ministry of Economy and Finance. The Finance Minister gave the opening speech and other distinguished guests included the Mayor of Athens and the President of the Athens Stock Exchange.

FG Wilson generator sets tailor made to support an NHS hospital

Country: UK
Industry Sector: Healthcare
Product(s): 2 x 650 kVA units
Application: Standby

Have you ever wondered how they construct model ships within a bottle not much bigger than the model itself? This was the problem that a large hospital located in South Wales, UK, encountered when seeking to increase its standby power capacity by over 50%. The plant-room housed a single 800kVA unit, associated exhaust and acoustic systems and the hospital trust sought to utilise this plantroom for the new equipment.

In conjunction with the trust’s appointed consultants, FG Wilson’s Dealer tendered for, and was subsequently successful in being awarded this challenging project. Due to the plant-rooms size, the design team had to tailor a solution utilising the limited space available. As previous experience with hospitals had shown, the solution had to comply with to NHS specification, meet tight budget constraints and be delivered on time.

Our Dealer’s Design & Installation team not only handled the removal of the existing unit, which was used elsewhere on site, but they also supplied and installed two new FG Wilson 650 kVA synchronising sets. All attenuation was installed outside the building and the exhaust system extended to an elevated position with venting situated above the surrounding buildings. The 6200 control system performed exceptionally well in testing, exceeding all expectations of delivery of the synchronised power to the load breaker within the perimeters set by the C44 NHS specification.

The FG Wilson synchronised units offered a cost saving and space saving solution, and thanks to the Project Managers, Technical Engineers, Installation Team & Commissioning Engineer everything was delivered on schedule and within budget.

FG Wilson generator sets provide prime power to telecom mast sites across Saudi Arabia

Country: Saudi Arabia
Industry Sector: Communications
Product(s): 48 x 40 kVA units
Application: Prime Power

Our scope of supply to Saudi Telecom Company required compliance to a very demanding specification, due to the harsh site conditions and remote locations in which the generator sets are required to operate in conjunction with their repeater stations. There were 24 sites involved in the project. Each site contains two 40 kVA generator sets housed in a common sound attenuated enclosure, which alternate at baseload duty on a weekly basis.

The generator sets run continuously as they provide prime power for the telecom mast sites. With the harsh conditions in the desert, the sets were designed to operate in temperatures of up to 50 degrees centigrade and withstand the possibility of frequent sand storms. Due to the difficulty in reaching the remote, unmanned, repeater station sites (often as much as 500km from the nearest town), the generator sets were also fitted with a lube oil top-up system which extends service intervals to 2000 hours.

Overall the project was a great success and was completed on time and to budget.

Providing power to Telecommunications in Papua New Guinea

Country: Papua New Guinea
Industry Sector: Communications
Product(s): 200 generator sets, ranging from 6 - 250 kVA
Application: Prime Power

UMW Niugini Limited, the FG Wilson Dealer for Papua New Guinea, supplied over 200 generator sets, ranging from 6 - 250 kVA, in prime power applications for Digicel, a telecommunications provider.

The project began in July 2007, when Digicel trialled four different generator set manufacturers’ products, including FG Wilson, to power their sites and switches. Frequent quality and performance issues encountered with competitor product resulted in these sets being replaced.

The majority of the FG Wilson generator sets are 11 kVA units ordered from FG Wilson APS factory, Tianjin. The generator sets are installed in a wide range of climatic conditions. Some in the central highlands are operating at over 2,400 metres above sea level. Others such as the ones located at Tabubil are operating in regions where the annual rainfall is measured in metres rather than millimetres per year! Approximately 30 generator sets have been installed at Rabaul Town where an active volcano continuously spits out ash and dust, which are extremely corrosive and abrasive elements for the generating sets to operate in.

Approximately 80% of the generator sets are installed where there is no mains power supply and have been running in prime power applications. Two generator sets are typically installed per Digicel site sharing the run time between them. After more than 10,000 hours no major engine or AC alternator failures occured across the entire fleet of FG Wilson units.

Due to the proven reliability of the generator sets, Digicel plans to run them for a total of four years, rather than two, without any midlife overhauls. This will be a major cost saving with most of the generator sets having registered around 20,000 hours by this time.

Digicel’s confidence in the product has led them to choose FG Wilson products for their forthcoming expansion phases as they can continue to improve reliable network coverage for their customers in Papua New Guinea. The reliability of FG Wilson products operating in extreme climatic conditions, has positioned FG Wilson as the unrivalled choice!

Why do I need a generator set?

There are three general reasons why home owners and businesses choose to purchase generator sets:

  • No mains electricity is available
  • There is insufficient power from the mains supply to meet requirements
  • To protect against the possibility of periodic or sustained loss of mains power, which can cause such things as economic loss, loss of power, loss of lighting, loss of life support equipment, loss of production, loss of data storage and loss of products, livestock or even human life.

Check out www.fgwilson.com for the range of products we have available.

What type of generator set do I need?

The type of generator that you need will vary depending on what it is required to power, where it will be installed and whether it is needed to run continuously or only when there is a power outage. To establish what type of generator is most suitable for you, contact your local FG Wilson dealer who will be able to size and quote for your requirements.

FG Wilson offers generator sets to provide prime power, standby power and rental power. We produce diesel and gas powered units as small as 6.8 kVA that are ideal for domestic and small retail properties up to sets as large as 2,200 kVA that can provide power for complete villages and even feed back into national electricity supply grids. Our generators can be started either manually or automatically and can be provided as open sets, canopied sets and containerised sets. There is also the option to have the generator mounted on a trailer if it needs to be transportable.

How do I know what size of generator set to purchase for my premises?

There is no one correct answer to this question. The size of generator set required will depend on a number of individual factors. To ensure that your generator set is correctly sized you should contact your local FG Wilson Dealer. They will make an appointment to come out and help you identify the kVA or wattage rating for all the equipment and appliances on your premises that would be required by the generator. This will then enable them to provide you with details of the exact size and type of generator that is most suitable for your needs.

FG Wilson Dealers host power solutions seminar for Consulting Engineers

In May 2011, FG Wilson's Power Solutions Team, alongside local Dealers FGW FZE and Ateco, conducted a series of technical seminars in the Middle East aimed at consulting engineers. FG Wilson Dealers are continuously building on the value they offer to this sector of the market. They have the expertise and resource to support Consultants from the initial design of customized power solutions through to installation.

These seminars provided an opportunity to not only form new relationships with consultants in the Middle East but to develop those we have already formed over the years.

Our main seminar took place at the Meridien Hotel in Abu Dhabi with over 120 guests in attendance.

Delegates received a brief overview of FG Wilson before moving on to the core technical focus of the evening. Topics particularly relevant to the Middle East, such as High Voltage Alternators and High Ambient Cooling Systems, were covered in the technical presentations.

To end the evening, a buffet dinner was served in the hotel garden, providing further opportunity for discussion with consultants on up and coming developments in the region.

We are delighted with the delegates' assessment of this seminar. The overwhelming majority, when surveyed, found the event very useful with the appropriate level of technical information.

The visit has helped to raise the profile of FG Wilson and its Dealers among key consultants and contractors in the Middle East. This will no doubt result in continued success in Solutions business for our Dealers in this region.
