"Pathways to Professions" event another success at Queen's University

As part of the deployment of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy, we are continuing to work in partnership with Queen’s University, Belfast.

The overall aim of the partnership is to encourage more school children to consider choosing the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects as GCSE and A-Levels at key arterial points in their education. Continued study of the STEM subjects is a key area of focus for academics following a Government report which identified them as 'strategically important and vulnerable subjects'. Over the past number of years, there have been concerns over the declining numbers choosing STEM subjects. This could possibly have an adverse effect on the amount of people pursuing a career in, for example, Engineering in the future. Raising awareness of the importance of studying the STEM subjects, as well as highlighting the exciting career opportunities which can result from this, is essential to ensure we have a future talent pipeline for the business. To this end, our facilities located in Northern Ireland, with the support of the parent company's Foundation, established a three-year innovative partnership with Queen’s University, which we are now in the second year of implementation.

To date this year we have been involved in a number of events. The second year of the programme kicked off with an Engineering parents evening held in the Great Hall at Queen's University. The aim of this event was to share information on engineering as a career choice and help inform students of the subjects they would need to consider to pursue this career. Over 200 people attended this event. In February, a group of 17 students took part in the Simulated Work Environment as part of Engineer's Week and at the end of March, four schools attended a Pathways to Professions Events again held in the Great Hall at Queen's University.

Each event is targeted at a different age group who will soon be making important decisions on their subject choices. As the partner host we have the opportunity to talk about our company and the many opportunities we have to offer. Employees kindly volunteered their time to talk to students about their job role and the subjects they studied at school which have helped them progress their career.

In the market for a Diesel Generator Set?

Industrial sectors and organisations cannot function without a stable supply of electrical energy all day and, for many, during the night. In today’s modern day world it is a must to keep machines working at all hours. Disruptions to business functions caused by power outages can equate to huge losses in revenue. It is for this reason that businesses need stand-by or an alternate power source. The regular alternative selected is a generator set or genset.

Generator Sets are employed to produce an alternate current to maintain businesses and keep machinery up and running until the electricity comes back on. A diesel generator is one that many industries rely on as their alternative power source. The power generated must be equivalent to the leading requirements consumed by machineries. The diesel engine itself does not make the electrical power. It is an electric generating motor attached, connected or coupled towards the engine that generates the power.

Diesel generator sets have the ability to generate the significant amount of electrical current needed to keep a large company in business during a power outage. Diesel fuel is cheaper to use than gasoline and diesel recycles and re-uses un-burnt fuel. Likewise, diesel engine operation does not require electricity for combustion. Battery or electric power is only needed to start the engine. It uses compression for combustion of the diesel/air mixture. Finally, diesel engines require less maintenance. Frequent change of filters and oil should keep it efficient in generating power.

Advanced exhaust and muffler systems installed can contribute greatly to a decrease of emission noise and exhaust smells. All generator sets are equipped with shock absorbing devices. These include rubber dampers that prevent vibration transmission towards the ground or floor. Lessening vibration avoids noise which could come from walls or panels that could otherwise be affected.

FG Wilson dealers are experts in the installation, commissioning and servicing of Generator Sets to meet customers needs. From 6.8 to 2200 kVA, our Diesel and Gas product range spans an array of applications from domestic use right through to power modules with the ability to operate as complete power stations supplying electricity to national grids. Where standard power products cannot meet your power demands, FG Wilson's Power Solutions Team of specialist engineers provide tailored products to even the most challenging and complex power requirements.
